Elementary Cross Country Finale Thursday

Chattanooga, TN (9/25/07)Hamilton County elementary school children will take part in the fourth and final cross county race on Thursday September 27, 2007 at 4:00 pm. The one mile race will take place at the Tennessee Riverpark near the Fishing Park off of Amnicola Highway.

The elementary cross country series consists of four one mile races, the first of which took place on September 6 at the Baylor School. The races are open to students enrolled in third, fourth, and fifth grades. An average of 450 children have taken part in each of the last three races.

Students from a total of eighteen public and private elementary schools, as well as home schooled children, have taken part in the series. Schools involved in the races include: Big Ridge, Brainerd Baptist, Bright, Daisy, Dupont, Ganns Middle Valley, Hickory Valley Christian, Lookout Mountain, McConnell, OLPH, Ooltewah, Red Bank, Soddy, St. Jude,  St. Nicholas, St. Peters, Thrasher, and Wallace Smith.

The cross country races are co-produced by teachers and coaches from the schools and the Chattanooga Track Club (CTC).

The Chattanooga Track Club first became involved in the cross country meets last year, providing volunteers to support the elementary school teachers and coaches. This year CTC expanded its involvement to include managing and timing the events.

CTC’s involvement in the cross country series is part of a larger effort by the track club to encourage physical activity and fitness among children. Physical activity is an important tool in combating childhood obesity. A recent study by the Trust for America’s Health determined that obesity is on the rise in Tennessee, a state that ranks fourth in the country for obesity among children aged 10 – 17 years.

Other youth programs offered by CTC include the Chickamauga Battlefield Junior Marathon and a series of “kiddie k” races offered throughout the year.

Chickamauga Battlefield Junior Marathon

Children currently enrolled in first through six grades are eligible to participate in the inaugural Chickamauga Battlefield Junior Marathon. Registration for the event will close on Friday September 28, 2007.

To participate in the junior marathon children need a parent to register them for the event and they need to pick up an official Chickamauga Battlefield Junior Marathon log sheet. Then, over the course of the next month and a half, children will run, jog, or walk a total of 25.2 miles at their own pace. Children can divide up the distance in any way they like; they just need to complete a total of 25.2 miles with adult supervision before November 10.

The final mile of the junior marathon will be completed during the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at 12pm. Runners who submit a completed log sheet and finish the last mile will receive a race number, t-shirt, finisher’s medal, and goody bag.

Registration forms are available at local YMCA and Sports Barns locations as well as Front Runner and Fast Break Athletics. You can also download a registration form at

The event is free to members of the Chattanooga Track Club and costs $5 for non-members.

The Chickamauga Battlefield Junior Marathon is sponsored by the Chattanooga Times Free Press, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Chattem, and the Chattanooga Track Club.
