Teenagers Dominate Inaugural Half Marathon & 5k Event Raises $13,000 for Local Charities Chattanooga, TN
–The Inaugural Scenic City Half Marathon and 5k was dominated by
teenagers. The half marathon was won by 20 year old Josh Wheeler, of Boone, NC, in a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes, 56 seconds. Jan Gautier, 42, of Chattanooga, TN, was the half marathon female champion, covering the course in a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, 48 seconds. The 5k champion was 18 year old Brian Mirrielees, of Fort Thomas, KY. Fourteen year old Catherine Ellise, of Lookout Mountain, GA, was the 5k female champion. William Warner, 54, of Ringold, GA, won the half marathon male masters division in a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes, 51 seconds. Madelyn Patton, 45, of Madison, AL, won the half marathon female masters division in a time of 1 hour, 38 minutes, 44 seconds. Jim Broyan, 55, of Ooltewah, TN, won the 5k male masters division. Paula Cooper, 53, of Hixson, TN, won the 5k female masters division . Charity Challenge The
event also featured a special charity challenge, with race participants
and volunteers raising money for eight local charities. The charity
challenge raised more than $13,000 for the charities. As
part of the Charity Challenge, a portion of each participant's entry
fee was donated to a charity of the participant's selection.
Participants also had the opportunity to raise additional funds for the
charity, if they choose, through a special online fund raising system. Charities participating in the Charity Challenge include McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center, Bethlehem Center, Chattanooga Room in the Inn,
Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County, Children’s
Home/Chambliss Shelter, Kidney Foundation of the Greater Chattanooga
Area, Tennessee Aquarium, and VORP Community Reconciliation Inc. The
Scenic City Half Marathon, 5k and Charity Challenge was a Chattanooga
Track Club event. Event sponsors included: Sports Barn, BlueCross
