Record Participation Expected at Chickamauga Battlefield Races

(Nov. 3, 2008 - Fort Oglethorpe, GA) The Chattanooga Track Club announced today that registration for the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon and Half Marathon has topped 1,200 entries. Registration for the half marathon, which has exceeded 700 runners, has closed.

The Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon, scheduled for Saturday November 8 at 7:30 am, has been run through the nation’s oldest military park for nearly 30 years. This year’s event features several changes and new features.

New Race Features
This is the first year a half marathon will be run in conjunction with the marathon. In past years the marathon was accompanied by a 10-mile race (2001 – 2007) and a 5k race (1990 – 1991).

The event also features a new start/finish location at the 6th Cavalry Museum on Barnhardt Circle in historic Fort Oglethorpe. The move to the new start/finish location was made possible through a partnership with the Fort Oglethorpe Tourism Committee.

This year the race will also feature several spectator areas within the Chickamauga Battlefield. Free shuttle buses will run between the start/finish area at the 6th Cavalry Museum and the spectator areas within the Battlefield.

Chickamauga Battlefield Jr. Marathon
The Chickamauga Battlefield Junior Marathon, in its second year, has also experienced record registration numbers. 250 first through sixth grade students will participant in the final mile of the Junior Marathon on November 8 at 12 pm.

Participants in the junior marathon have spent the last few months individually logging 25.2 miles. Children were able to divide up the distance in any way they liked; they just needed to run, jog, or walk a total of 25.2 miles with adult supervision before November 8.

On race day the students will run the final mile of the marathon, marking the completion of a full marathon. Runners who submit a completed log sheet and finish the last mile will receive a race number, t-shirt, finisher’s medal, and goody bag.
