The
oldest continuously running road race on the Chattanooga Track Club schedule
will take place on Saturday, April 19 when the 46th Chickamauga Chase is
contested at Chickamauga Park.
The
race, which began in 1968 as a 10-miler, is also one of the most popular on the
CTC schedule as it takes runners around one loop of the famous Chickamauga
National Park, which was the site of some of the most fierce and deadly battles
in the Civil War. The 9.3-mile main event is a scenic run with rolling
hills. It's set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on the road next to Wilder Tower.
A
shorter 5K race is also scheduled to begin at the same time while a 2.4-mile
scenic walk and a Kiddie K are also scheduled that day.
Proceeds
from this event benefit the Friends of the Park.
Race-day
registration begins at 7 a.m. with fees of $40 for the 15K, $25 for the Scenic
Walk and $15 for the Kiddie K. Strollers and baby joggers are not allowed
in the longer races, but are encouraged in the Scenic Walk and the Kiddie K.
There
will be packet pickup and registration on Friday, April 18 at Outdoor
Chattanooga, located at 200 River Street in Coolidge Park.
John
Gilpin is the defending champion for the 15K after posting a time of 50:57 last
year while Amanda Tate was the women's winner in 2013 with a time of 59:52.
Jason
McKinney and Becca Umbarger were the 5K winners last year with times of 18:08
and 21:26, respectively.
Parking
on Saturday will be in the huge field next to the area around Wilder Tower and
is about four-tenths of a mile from the start-finish line.
George
Skonberg is the race director. Additional information can be obtained by
