For Immediate Release

The 35th Annual Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon will be held on Saturday, November 8 with the 26-2-mile main event and accompanying half-marathon both starting at 7:30 a.m. from the road next to the polo field at the Sixth Cavalry Museum on Barnhardt Circle.

There are still some spots available in both races, so registration can be completed by going to www.active.com and will be available until midnight on Wednesday. There will also be registration at the packet pickup on Friday from 4-8:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe, located at at 2645 Lafayette Road, which is on the left just past Highway 2A.

The pre-race pasta dinner will also be held at First Baptist from 5:30 until 8 on Friday.

The marathon includes a double loop through historic Chickamauga Battlefield, the location of some of the most fierce battles in the Civil War. The route includes rolling hills, but it’s also flat in spots and a perfect course for first-timers.

The half-marathon only requires one trip around the park. The Junior Marathon will also conclude on Saturday with the last mile starting at noon for youngsters in grades one through six.

This race, put on by members of the Chattanooga Track Club, is a primary fund raiser for the CTC. It was chosen in 2010 by Runner’s World as the “most family friendly marathon,” runner-up for “most scenic marathon” and third for “best overall.”

In addition to the two longer races, there will also be a 5K, which starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday. A portion of each entry fee for the 5K benefits the T.C. Thompson’s Children’s Hospital at Erlanger.

Finishers for each race will receive a commemorative medal and this year’s medal honors the state of Alabama and the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Chickamauga.

Don Humphreys is the marathon defending champion after winning last year with a time of 2:51:23 while Jessica Marlier is the defending female winner after taking third in 2013 with a time of 2:52:58.

Jason Altman and Terri Kirkman are the defending champions for the half-marathon with times of 1:14:07 and 1:29:56, respectively.

Cory Aulich and Peggy Fults were the 5K winners a year ago with times of 19:15 and 23:19.

Jenni Berz is the race director for this year and can be contacted at 667-9431. Also, more information can be obtained by going to www.battlefieldmarathon.com.

The race will be held rain or shine.
