The first of 16 road races on the Chattanooga Track Club’s 2015 schedule will be held on Saturday, February 28 with the Eighth annual Scenic City Half-Marathon Charity Challenge and 5K.


Both races will start and finish at Finley Stadium on 20th Street with the longer 13.1-mile main event starting at 8 a.m.and the 5K to follow at 8:15. Finishers from each race will receive a medal and a technical T-shirt with overall and age group awards also being presented.


The Charity Challenge involves eight organizations in the Chattanooga area with each participant choosing the charity of his/her choice, including the Chambliss Center For Children, Chattanooga Community Kitchen, Chattanooga Room In The Inn, the Children’s Advocacy Center for Hamilton County, Girls on the Run, Secondlife Chattanooga, Special Olympics Tennessee Southeast Region or the YMCA of Chattanooga.


On-line registration is available or Friday at packet pickup. Entry fee for the half-marathon is $80 with $7.50 going to the charity of your choice. Entry fee for the 5K is $40 with $5 of that going to the same.


There is no race-day registration for the half, but runners can still sign up for the 5K on Saturday morning from 6:30 until 7:30.


Packet pickup will be held at Finley Stadium on Friday, Feb. 27 from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Each runner must bring a photo ID and an confirmation number to pick up their packet.


Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable, but anyone wanting to switch from the half-marathon to the 5K may do so on Friday night or Saturday morning.


A Litespeed road bike will also be given away at the awards ceremony on Saturday with every person in every event entered into the drawing.


Last year’s winners in the 13.1-mile race included Paul Stuart with a time of 1:11:49 while Jack Findley was second in 1:14:49. Sydney Marshall, a young lady from Athens, Ga., was the female winner after finishing eighth overall in 1:22:27. Jeanette Wilson was the runner-up female in 1:32:06.


Defending champions in the 5K include Joseph Goetz in 16:05 and Betsy Heines in 20:06.
