Geno Phillips Wins SuperHero 10K Again With Same Time

Jennifer Curtis Claims Women's Win After Runner-Up Finish Last Year

Saturday, August 22, 2015 - by John Hunt

Geno Phillips ran the exact time on Saturday as he did last year at the annual Superhero 10K race, but this year’s event was much cooler than last.

Phillips was all alone as he crossed the line at Enterprise South Nature Park in 35 minutes, 26 seconds while runner-up Dean Thompson followed in 37:15

.

Ryan Shrum, who was fourth last year in 38:03, claimed third in 37:44.

Jennifer Curtis was the runner-up a year ago behind Jessica Marlier with a time of 43:39. She was almost a minute slower this year, but the results were better as she claimed the overall win for the women with a time of 44:28, which was 11th overall

.

Lisa Logan was the second female and Masters winner in 46:42 while Diana McElveen was third in 50:03

.

Justin Guy was the winner in the 5K as he covered the 3.1-mile route in 18 minutes, 21 seconds. Tyler Ramage and Jasper Wilson followed with times of 20:03 and 20:28

.

Ashley Humble was the women’s winner in 24:05, which was 10th overall while Barbara Ensign followed in 24:37, which was 13th in the field numbering 173 finishers. Shanna Derogatis was third in 24:56

.

Saturday’s event was the fourth annual where proceeds from the race benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of East Tennessee. Even though weather conditions were much more suitable for running than was the case last year, there were fewer participants as only 91 took the 10K challenge

.

While these courses are scenic and quite pleasant, there is an uphill start where runners begin with a long climb. However, they’re rewarded at the end as the final 1.4 miles is downhill and fast

.

“I think my time was the same as last year,” the 43-year-old Phillips said shortly after crossing the finish line

.

“It was just a nice, steady run as Andy Highlander and Dean Thompson started out together. I’ve been battling an ear infection this week and haven’t run as much, but I’m happy,” the Red Bank Middle School history teacher and coach added

.

Saturday was the first time that Thompson had run this particular course. He had been doing construction work this week and may have been a bit tired, but he ran well anyway

.

“It was never in doubt who would win this race,” Thompson laughed following the race

.

“My biggest worry was the guy behind me, but it’s a tough course with a lot of long climbs. It’s like being on a roller coaster the whole time. I’m not really happy with my time, but today I’m happy with second. I’d love to be a little bit closer to Geno,” Thompson added, admitting that he’ll celebrate his 50th birthday in three weeks

.

“I had a course PR as I beat last year’s time by 18 seconds,” said Shrum. “It was a little cooler today,” he added before going for a post-race cool-down run

.

Curtis is a 33-year-old social worker who works with the elderly. Saturday’s race was only her third 10K and she’s still trying to find the magic she had on the first one two years ago

.

“I was second last year, but my time today was much slower and I don’t know why. I’m training more and even doing speed work, so I can’t explain my slower times

.

“I felt okay, but I’m not happy with my time. I pushed the whole way, but I didn’t get the end result I was looking for. This is a tough course and the only redeeming part are the downhills,” she nodded

.

Guy is a 42-year-old waiter at the St. John’s Restaurant in Chattanooga who lives in Dayton. His 5K times are normally in the 17-minute range, but he was just as happy with a winning time in the 18s

.

“I felt strong on the downhills, but I wasn’t going to be happy unless I won. It’s a tough course and we were rewarded with the downhills. Considering the hills, I’m pleased with my time today,” he said as sweat dripped from his brow

.

The next race on the Chattanooga Track Club schedule will be held next Saturday in Marion County with the initial running of the Jasper Highlands 5K. The course is scenic with spectacular views of the Tennessee River and valley below. Take 1-24 West toward Nashville and take exit 152-B
